Producer Information
It was 109 years ago that our great-grandfather Johann Polz laid the foundation stone for the winery on Grassnitzberg, Rilke wrote his Duino Elegies and the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic. Today we are the 4th generation working to bring our idea of excellence into the glass. With our hands, with our soil, with nature. Erich Polz Jr. has been running the business since spring 2020 with the will to lead all the fabulous potential and valuable knowledge that lies in our family’s long history into a good future. A future for many more generations at the farm. Erich’s brother Christoph is responsible for the cellar and vinification. Empathetic, calm, with great trust in every grape. This is because every single fruit at the Polz winery is actually hand-picked and begins its venerable journey to its happy destination. It doesn’t matter whether they are stimulating regional wines full of liveliness or the greatest possible wines in our sphere of influence that have matured to perfection. Our passion is handcraft. And our craft grows directly from our origins in southern Styria. For many years now, significant attention has been paid to the sustainability of our work, and will be even more intensive in the future. Be it the gentle pruning that has been practiced for over a decade, the complete avoidance of insecticides or the careful conversion of all of our vineyards to organic farming that is currently being implemented. “We have been learning every day for 109 years. We live from and with vital vines in healthy soil. We are increasingly taking paths that are untrodden. Because nothing is riskier than not risking anything.” Erich Polz Jr.
