Producer Information
Velenosi is an Italian estate based in the DOC wine province of Piceno in Marche. The estate specializes in the local wines of this region, specifically Falerio dei Colli Ascolani and Rosso Piceno. The company was established in 1984 by Ercole and Angela Velenosi, as they bottled their first vintage of Falerio Velenosi. This white wine is a blend of local Passerina and Pecorino grape varieties with the more well-known Trebbiano. All of the grapes for this wine are sourced from Velenosi’s Ascoli Piceno vineyards, planted on sandy soils at altitudes averaging 200m (650ft) above sea level. Harvest is carried out by hand and the wine is fermented for 10 days in stainless steel vats before aging and bottling. This original Falerio wine has now been joined by several other white wines. These include a second Falerio wine, Vigna Solaria, as well as a selection of varietal Verdicchio, Chardonnay, Pecorino and Passerina wines. These are made from grapes grown on the estate’s Castelli di Jesi, Castel di Lama, Ascoli Piceno and Offida vineyards. Velenosi released its first Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore wine in 1986 and the range has expanded since to include a standard Rosso Piceno, and three more Rosso Piceno Superiore wines. These wines are made from a blend of 70 percent Montepulciano and 30 percent Sangiovese grapes, both sourced from vineyards in Offida and Ascoli Piceno. This core Rosso Piceno portfolio is bolstered by two Lacrima di Morro d’Alba wines, an Offida Rosso wine and a Lacrima-Montepulciano blend. The estate also makes several sparkling and cherry-flavored wines, as well as an extra virgin olive oil.
