Detailed Description
From Tria Prima distillery comes this single malt Australian spirit. Well, it’s a ‘2 Year Old Australian Single Malt Whisky’ by Aus regulations, where maturation rates are faster due to being largely subtropical. But alas, here we are in the distinctly temperate climate of the UK, and three years is the minimum age for a whisky, so a malt spirit this is. The folks at That Boutique-y Malt Company decided a spirit by any other name smells (and tastes) just as delicious in this case, especially seeing as it’s been matured in a first fill Tawny cask (that’s an Australian fortified wine similar to Port). This limited bottling joins its Return to Oz collection, and features a blue ringed octopus on the label.
Tria Prima 2 Year Old (That Boutique-y Malt Company) | 500ML Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and fruity. Plum and apricot with dried fruits, sultanas, raisins, and peel. Sweet caramel toffee with a nuttiness coming through.
Palate: Rich and mouth filling. Again, quite fruity, with figs and dried plums leading a high cocoa content dark chocolate. There’s a spicy, savoury note too, balsamic-BBQ sauce-like.
Finish: Dried fruits linger with dustings of cocoa powder.
Distillery Information
The Tria Prima distillery is run by a Brit, and Boutique-y Whisky fan Paul Shand. Paul and his wife, Trang, founded the distillery in 2017 and only launched their whiskies in 2021. Paul sold his whisky collection to fund the construction of his distillery, including a sizeable amount of TBWC bottles! Our Tria Prima is the first independently bottled from them and it’s a 2 Year Old Australian Single Malt Whisky (by Aus definition). It’s been matured in an ex-Grant Burge, first fill Tawny cask. – Tawny is the name of Australian fortified wine, made in a very similar fashion to those bottles of tawny Port found in Portugal.
