Mortlach 1936 46 Year | Tasting Notes
Nose: Unexpectedly fruity with lots of prunes, plums, and overripe apples. Followed by black cherries and raspberry jam. Later on more on dusty libraries and wax polished furniture. Hints of old leather. Whiff of smoke from cigar boxes. Faint earthiness in the background.
Palate: Now more on apricots, bitter grapefruit and orange peel. A touch of cedar wood. Raisins. Clover honey and vanilla as well. Some fudgy notes of toffee and butterscotch. Herbs of camphor, caraway and cinnamon. Though the whisky is quite thin on the palate, it’s still very lively and multi-layered.
Finish: Long and dry. A little lemon. Roasted almonds. Cinnamon at the end.
Distillery Information
The 2.81 distillation process created by Alexander Cowie nearly 200 years ago remains unchanged to this day. Known by all as “The Way,” only he knew why each of the six stills has a different shape, and why the copper pipes are tangled in such a fashion for cutting and re-cutting the spirit.
