Hellyers Road 6 Year Old Cask No.16322.02 Peated New Vibrations Single Malt Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes
Nose Precise, delicate. Floral (lily, iris), vanilla, herbaceous (alfalfa, hay), smoky, root-like (ginger) and empyreumatic (pellets, ashes), the first nose is also fruity (William pear) and licorice-like. On aeration, the aromatic palette reveals darker, oily (olive), camphorated, animal (bacon) and medicinal (sinapism) peat.
Palate Clear, slender. Behind a gorgeous mineral reduction (schist, slate), the attack gives its own take on the animal character of the nose (bresaola, Grisons beef). The herbal mid-palate (nettle, peppermint) becomes lemony and milky (coconut, vanilla flan). The very end of the palate is infused (sage, lemongrass).
Finish Long, distinguished. The earthy start of the finish (dried peat) brings to mind the harvest period (cut barley). In the after-taste, the same blocks of rich, oily and salty peat mix with the sweet wispy smoke of a Havana cigar.
Distillery Information
Hellyers Road began in Burnie, Tasmania. Above the town is a road that, back in the 1800s used to be bush. In 1827, Henry Hellyer carved out the bush to create a trail with nothing but the most basic tools. Fast forward to 1999, and a group of dairy farmers in Burnie were so inspired by Henry Hellyer that they created a whisky distillery in his honour.
