Detailed Description
A decadent Grande Champagne Cognac here from Ferrand, made using some extraordinary eaux-de-vie. Before bottling, the assemblage is allowed some time in what the producers call a “zebra” cask. Staves on this cask are progressively replaced every few years, which the Ferrand team says lends yet more complexity and finesse to the expression.
Ferrand Légendaire Cognac | 700ML Tasting Notes
Nose: It starts with a very traditional rancio profile with chocolate, plum, sandalwood, tobacco and nutmeg. It then evolves into a very floral profile of dried rose, jasmine and saffron with delicious notes of passion fruit and old Colheita port with an elegant woody base of cedar and walnut.
Palate: Creamy and full, it follows the impressions of the nose with spicier and more woody notes such as pepper, cloves, cardamom and paprika, all coated in caramel, almond, vanilla and acacia honey.
Finish: Long, the very old rancio style extends to a repertoire that is both classic, made of leather, hazelnut, cinnamon and liquorice, and original, revealing gooseberry, cantaloupe and honeysuckle.
Distillery Information
Without the influence of Alexandre Gabriel, it is fair to say that there would no Maison Ferrand as we know it today. An encounter between Gabriel and one of the oldest wine growing families in the Cognac region in 1989 led him to realise that one of the oldest Cognac houses with some of the best savoir-faire of the region was at the time totally dormant. Gabriel offered his expertise to help market the good stocks of Cognac the house retained and outlined his intention to bring back the true expression of Grande Champagne’s great terroir through age-old, craft-based production methods.
