    Detailed Description

It was matured for 34 months in oak, 40% of which was new. Deep garnet-purple, the nose unabashedly struts its stuff, giving up flamboyant plum preserves, blackberry compote, Black Forest cake and star anise notes with hints of Sichuan pepper, forest floor, lavender, lilacs, Ceylon tea and smoked meats. Big, concentrated and full-bodied, this rockstar is a powerhouse of energy, supported by a rock solid, firm and super plush tannins and finely knit freshness, finishing very long. Tantalizingly delicious now, patience will be rewarded here. Given this wine‚Äôs structure and intensity, it should easily cellar for 30-40 years. 370 cases were made.”

    • Jeb Dunnuck: The 2015 No 9 Cumulus Vineyard continues to show brilliantly, with the more tight, focused, tannic style of the vintage. It doesn‚Äôt have the upfront sexiness of the 2016, but it‚Äôs incredibly balanced, deep, long, and complex. I loved it last year and wrote that it‚Äôs going to flirt with perfection in another handful of years, and I stand by those words.

    Producer Information

Sine Qua Non has its own winemaking facility in Ventura, California not far from the Santa Barbara vineyards where the fruit is sourced from. In the last few years Manfred and his wife, Elaine, have begun creating their own vineyards dedicated to Rhone varietals. Their winemaking philosophy is to work in very small batches, gravity flow, natural yeasts (unless a fermentation problem is anticipated), long lees aging for the whites and repeated racking for the reds to open them up. This is a modified explanation of a very dedicated and artistic approach to winemaking. The wines are simultaneously very rich and elegant, superbly balanced and thoroughly harmonious with food, never overwhelming.
