Red Wine: 2004 Sine Qua Non | Into The Dark Grenache

2004 Into the Dark: This absolutely magnificent wine with most of it emerging from the estate’s 11 Confessions Vineyard. It still has a very opaque ruby/purple color, along with a sweet nose of graphite, wood smoke, spice box, white chocolate, kirsch and creme de cassis.

    Detailed Description

Sine Qua Non is one of the most famous cult wineries in the world and winemaker, Manfred Krankl, is celebrated for crafting tiny quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines from exceptional vineyards across the Californian Central Coast. This is a remarkably rare 3-litre bottling of the 2004 release, Into the Dark. It is a blend of 84% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah and 1% Viognier sourced mostly from the estate-owned 11 Confessions Vineyard. It is incredibly richly fruited with layers of cassis, black raspberry and cherry, but offers delicious savoury counterpoints of dark chocolate, woodsmoke, star anise and graphite.

    Reviews:

    • Wine Advocate: More up-front and open-knit, the 2004 In the Dark (Grenache) checks in as a blend of 84% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah and 1% Viognier that comes mostly from Manfred‚Äôs 11 Confessions Vineyard, yet includes small portions from Alban (10%) and Alta Mesa (9%) Vineyard. Reminding me of Clos Saint-Jean‚Äôs Sanctus Sanctorum with its incredible bouquet of sweet kirsch, licorice, dried baking spices, graphite and ground pepper, this beauty flows onto the palate with impeccable purity, perfect integration of its fruit, tannin and acidity, and blockbuster length. As is common with this estate‚Äôs wine, it‚Äôs the purity paired with serious richness that sets it apart
    • Vinous: Bright violet. Pungent raspberry and cassis on the nose, picking up sexy floral and mineral character with air. Silky, sharply focused red fruit preserve flavors offer excellent thrust but possess an airy, pinot-like personality, gaining weight and sweetness on the close. The balance and finesse of this wine are spectacular: how can it carry 16.1% alcohol so effortlessly?

    Producer Information

Sine Qua Non has its own winemaking facility in Ventura, California not far from the Santa Barbara vineyards where the fruit is sourced from. In the last few years Manfred and his wife, Elaine, have begun creating their own vineyards dedicated to Rhone varietals. Their winemaking philosophy is to work in very small batches, gravity flow, natural yeasts (unless a fermentation problem is anticipated), long lees aging for the whites and repeated racking for the reds to open them up. This is a modified explanation of a very dedicated and artistic approach to winemaking. The wines are simultaneously very rich and elegant, superbly balanced and thoroughly harmonious with food, never overwhelming.
