Another limited edition named for the “Cu Bocan” – or “ghost dog” that’s said to stalk the peat moorland close to the Tomatin Distillery. This whisky shares its name with the ghostly spectre. Distilled in December 1988 and drawn from bourbon hogsheads and refill Sherry butts after 28 years of maturation, the casks used were previously home to one of Islay‚Äôs peatiest potions. Not surprisingly, you can expect hints of the smoky magic to have infused this final creation. The distillery tasting notes suggest flavours of “Candied tropical fruits perfectly balanced with an earthy peat tang followed by warming dried fruit, blood orange and a gentle nut note. Originally released in 2013 the final stocks have just arrived in Australia. 2,200 bottles produced.

Nose: Delicate campfire smoke and sweet ash give way to stewed pears, Peach Melba and toasted coconut. Hints of fresh cut grass, heather and cereal linger in the background with creamy buttermilk.

Palate: Candied tropical fruits are perfectly balanced with an earthy peat tang. In time, warming dried fruit, blood orange and a gentle nut note emerge.

Finish: Earthy smoke and oak spice linger with a creamy texture.

Distillery Information

Tomatin distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the village of Tomatin. Its whisky is classified as being from the Highland region, as it is 25 minutes south of Inverness. Although it is thought that whisky has been distilled on the site since the 16th century, when cattle drivers would buy from a local still, the distillery was not established until 1897, under the name of Tomatin Spey Distillery Co Ltd. The company went bankrupt in 1906, and reopened under new ownership in 1909. After the liquidation of its owners in 1986, it was taken over by Japanese conglomerate Takara Shuzo and was renamed Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd.
