Description
Detailed Description
Intense aromatics of currant and plum are complemented by savory notes of black olive, anise and allspice. A bright entry of briary black raspberry gives way to a bold palate of supple, lively tannins and a powerful, lingering finish.
Producer Information
Seghesio Family Vineyards is a wine producer based in California’s Sonoma Valley. It is best known for its wines made from the Zinfandel grape variety. The estate was founded in 1895 with the original 53-hectare (130-acre) Home Ranch vineyard. The estate was extended during the mid 20th Century with vineyards that had previously sold fruit to Seghesio. By the early 1980s, Seghesio’s Healdsberg winery was selling its production in bulk, but was converted to premium wine production when Ted Seghesio began working at the family firm. In 2014, the company added the 10-hectare (24-acre) Montafi Ranch Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, around half of which was planted in 1916. This brought the total Seghesio estate to around 160 hectares (400 acres) with another 10 hectares farmed under contract in Rockpile. A small proportion of the portfolio comes from historic vineyards owned by other growers. Seghesio makes an extensive range of Zinfandel wines, led by the Home Ranch and San Lorenzo single-vineyard cuvées from Alexander Valley. The Block 8 comes from a younger block in the San Lorenzo vineyard. There are several other expressions of the variety from a range of other vineyards, including one from a ridge high in the Mayacamas Mountains, and one that falls under the Rockpile AVA. The estate makes several other Italian-styled red wines. These include three wines made from Sangiovese, as well as a Barbera, an Aglianico, and Defiant, a blend of Aglianico, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also three varietal white wines made from Pinot Grigio, Vermentino and Arneis.
